Theme

•    Did any characters change during the course of the book?  How did they change?  What forces caused the change?
•    Did the book end the way you thought it would?  What clues did the author give that made you think that?
•    What is  “big picture” category that the story is about?  Friendship?  Survival?  Injustice?  How does the author convey the theme?

  2. I think Pi as a person has changed. He changed the way he thought about animals as to truly understand one you must first-hand learn about it. My group mates have made the connection from Pi to RP. However, I don't believe the two are similar at all. Pi changes throughout the story and RP adapts. RP adapts to do whatever he needs in order to survive. This is evident from when RP saves Pi because RP needs Pi for food, and then turns his back on PI when he doesn't need him anymore.

  3. Pi has changed a lot over the course of the book. He learned how to survive on the sea by himself, while providing for Richard Parker too. He learned how to fish, and he had to give up his vegetarian lifestyle in order to survive. This ties in to the theme of survival, which is one of the main themes in the book. I think that the book ended like I thought it would, because Richard Parker didn't stay with Pi. As soon as RP was able to provide for himself, he left Pi.

Relationships

In the "Life of Pi" by Yann Martel Pi opens the early chapters by introducing himself. Pi mentions a lot of things from his religion to his interest in Zoology. Pi then talks about how he has been surrounded by animals his whole life and the relationships between him and all the animals. The relationships are to the point where he could control any animal he stepped infront of, except one. Not a Hyena. Not a orangutan, and not mighty king of the jungle. It was a tiger, named Richard Parker. Pi had spoken of the Tiger as an animal that could not be controlled, but I feel the Tiger is an animal that is misunderstood. Fast-forward to Pi being stranded in the ocean with his biggest fear (Tiger), and I feel it is a real possibility that Pi learns to love and care for the Tiger with the name of Richard Parker. I feel this way because Pi speaks of tigers in a mysterious way, and seems to not know much about them. This leads me to infer that by the end of the novel, Pi will develop...
